...The major problems that are making our part of the world -- the
Mediterranean and the Middle East -- one of its most disquieting corners,
such as illegal migration, destruction of fishery resources, the sense of
external exploitation, all cry out for precisely the only possible remedy
so succinctly captured in the Director-Genera's golden phrase: in-
situations and policies for decent work in the region. It is still is
crucial to the vision of the ILO's objectives...

... The decision to adopt a comprehensive standard in the fishing sector is
timely, given the fact that the sector is one of the most hazardous and has
the highest fatality rate. Let me take this opportunity to express the
Kenyan Government's appreciation of the ILO for the technical assistance
given in the re- view just completed of six core chapters of our country's
labour laws, with the aim of ensuring harmony between our domestic legislation
and various international labour standards which we have ratified...

training and development are important questions to which answers must be found,
to the benefit of the whole of humanity...

...The Government of Fiji welcomes the first discussion on the work
in the fishing sector as it will give us an insight into how
the rest of the member States are dealing with the issue and
it applauds the decision of the Governing Body to revise the
seven existing ILO standards concerning fishing.
A significant number of our workers are engaged in the fishing
industry, in particular, foreign seagoing fishing companies from the
Republic of Korea and Japan. To this end, my country supports the
rationale of the revision, which is to consolidate the standards for
seafarers into a comprehensive new standard that will take into account
differences in fishing operations, employment arrangements, methods of
remuneration and address other critical issues such as health and
safety… |
